The Littleton High School Fall play is Stage Door! Written in 1936 by Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufman, the play follows a group of aspiring actresses in a New York City boardinghouse as they struggle with their careers and relationships.
This Depression-era romantic comedy has an ensemble cast, full of interpersonal connections, decisions, and banter. The original production ran for 169 performances to rave reviews. Critic Don Druker in the Chicago Reader reviews the film adaption as:
“-Pure corn, it nevertheless manages to capture the manic-depressive dormitory atmosphere of young actresses trying to make it in New York (circa 1937).”
“Manic depressive” is an excellent way to distinguish the play’s homey and fast-paced mood, with the main set being the house’s living room, where people move in and out and around the space.
