Mary's Menu

By Mary Crowley

Disclaimer: I want to preface this by saying how much I, along with the rest of Littleton Public Schools, immensely appreciate the work our lunch staff do. They are responsible for feeding hundreds of children nutritious, full meals every day and do always do so cheerfully. This column is not intended to berate them for their work but instead commentate on the products they are given by our government and are forced to make appetizing. We must also understand we are getting meals for free this year so they are not expected to be the best quality in the world.

Tuesday April 5th - Croissant Egg and Cheese Sandwich

Another entry in the troublesome breakfast sandwich saga in our school lunch calendars. However, this one was better than anticipated. The croissant wasn’t half bad, especially compared to its predecessors; it was flaky and had a pretty okay flavor. The dryness was its only downfall but what more can you expect out of school lunch. The bacon was also a very welcome addition that made what I otherwise would have called a monstrosity somewhat bearable. The god-awful cheese still deducts some points for me, so 6.5/10.

Thursday April 28th - French Toast Sticks (and a random pancake?), Hash-brown, and Sausage

A renowned fan favorite, the french toast sticks deserve all the hype. Their crispy exterior, chewy inside, and lovely cinnamon flavor make them a star dish here at LHS. Quite frankly I’m not sure why I didn’t cover them sooner. I am not sure why we all got one random pancake among this bunch on this specific Breakfast Thursday but eh, it’s fine, the pancakes r tolerable with syrup. The sausage and hash-brown are phenomenal as ever. Bravo, 9/10.

Spicy Chicken Sandwich

Another beloved classic, I am finally covering the “spicy” chicken sandwich. Now, I understand the devotion some students have to this morsel, but do not be deceived, I will not be going easy on it. It isn’t phenomenal, but it’s just good enough that I keep coming back to it. The slight heat kind of overpowers any other flavor this could possibly have, in the best way possible. Put some ranch on that bad boy and you got a winning combination. However, no amount of condiments can distract from how horribly dry this sandwich is, especially the bun. The slightly grey color of the chicken is also another factor I must call into question. I’m not sure how to feel, 6/10.

BONUS REVIEW

Friday 4/29 - Slimy Carrots

Traumatizing. Why does it look like the carrot had an accident. Never want to experience this fear again. 0/10.
