Mary's Menu
By Mary Crowley
Disclaimer: I want to preface this by saying how much I, along with the rest of Littleton Public Schools, immensely appreciate the work our lunch staff do. They are responsible for feeding hundreds of children nutritious, full meals every day and do always do so cheerfully. This column is not intended to berate them for their work but instead commentate on the products they are given by our government and are forced to make appetizing. We must also understand we are getting meals for free this year so they are not expected to be the best quality in the world.
Tuesday February 1st - Chicken Parmesan
In spite of my hesitation, this meal turned out to be pretty good. I was dismayed at the appearance of the cheese but it wasn’t actually that bad. There was too much of it in my opinion but that may be the lactose intolerance in me talking (the things I sacrifice for this column…), overall it wasn’t intolerable. Other than that, I had no complaints. The chicken was fine, the pasta was fine, all okay just, unsurprisingly, nothing spectacular. 6.5/10.
Wednesday February 2nd - Turkey "Nachos"
This was a tricky one. First off, these were not nachos. It was meat & some toppings placed on top of a bowl of nacho cheese Doritos, so definitely not advertised accurately. With some tweaking though, this meal was salvaged. I, unpopularly, don’t like Doritos (especially not with a hot scoop of meat on them), so I decided to keep those off to the side and just make my own version of a Chipotle bowl instead. I put the lettuce and salsa on top and it honestly wasn’t too bad. The meat burned my mouth a little bit, but after a while it cooled so all was well. 5/10. (Editor’s note: In person, this looked indistinguishable from an actual fast food burrito bowl- kudos to Mary for her ingenuity)
Tuesday February 15th - General Tso’s Chicken
Per popular request, I shall be reviewing this LHS classic. This meal always hits. The sauce is always really sweet and tangy, and the rice paired well with it. Plus I got a TON of chicken on my plate so that’s a win too. My only minor complaint is the chicken texture was kinda eh but what more can you expect? Apologies for the picture but it really encapsulates just how eager I was to eat this. Overall very yummy. 8/10.
