Now that kids have more widespread access to technology and the internet, it’s hard to imagine what toys could still possibly hold their attention. In a quest to see what kids are into these days, let’s examine this list and some other 2022 gift lists.
Luckily, wooden blocks, Duplos, and Magnetiles are still popular enough to rank on Wirecutter’s “The Best Gifts for Kids for 2022.” It’s good that kids can still be excited by simple objects that channel imagination and not just iPad games. Some of the most notably nostalgic items on the list range from a mix and match cupcake set to a Perler Beads Pet Parade Kit. Perler Beads are the perfect toy for the kid who can’t draw but loves crafts (me, my entire childhood). Some other random items on the Wirecutter list are a mechanical robot crab, rock climbing wall (how do you gift a rock climbing wall?), and a game called Invasion of the Cow Snatchers (which I hope to play someday).
However, not all toys on these lists are cutesy. On a list from CBS News titled “Christmas 2022 gift guide: The best gifts under $50 (with deals),” there is a section on the best toys to gift this year. The top toy in this section is the Little Live Pets Gotta Go Turdle. Yes, it’s a toy turtle that uses the bathroom. Do kids actually like this stuff? Here’s a quote from the toy’s description: “The so-called magic poop can be reclaimed from the water and turned back into Turdle food when dried.” Gross.
A toy I’m surprised to see in New York Magazine’s “The Holiday Toys to Buy Before They Sell Out, According to Experts,” is Crazy Aaron’s Amazing Prediction Thinking Putty, which is second on the list. I am shocked but happy about it because I didn’t think putty was still the rage. Putty is useful as a toy and fidget, making it a fun duo-purpose gift.
Hopefully, little kids will get a combination of simple and silly gifts this year. Just watch where you step. Happy Holidays!
