Mary's Menu

Disclaimer: I want to preface this by saying how much I, along with the rest of Littleton Public Schools, immensely appreciate the work our lunch staff do. They are responsible for feeding hundreds of children nutritious, full meals every day and do always do so cheerfully. This column is not intended to berate them for their work but instead commentate on the products they are given by our government and are forced to make appetizing. We must also understand we are still getting meals for free this year so they are not expected to be the best quality in the world.

Thursday March 2nd - Hard Shell Tacos

Right off the bat I want to address how this meal was, in fact, not hard shell tacos. It was, at best, glorified nachos. However, this lunch ended up being pretty tasty despite its misleading title. The meat was well-seasoned and I liked the balance that the vegetables brought. My only qualms were that I wish the cheese was melted & the beans heated up. Overall solid lunch, 7/10.

Wednesday March 8th - Chicken Fried Rice

I had high hopes going into this lunch and was met with pretty average results. The main downside of this meal was the aforementioned rice itself; it wasn’t very flavorful at all. The dumplings were a pleasant surprise and I was shocked at the portion of them we received, it was very filling! They were a little soft due to being presumably steamed but did not taste horrible. However the  “sweet and sour sauce” served on the side just tasted like gelatinous confusion. 5/10

SPECIAL REVIEW: Thursday March 23rd - Build Your Own Indian Dish

When I say this lunch was phenomenal, I mean it was PHENOMENAL. Not only is it an outstanding effort from our lunch staff to make Indian food that aims to be authentic (though it’s really not my place to comment if it actually was), they made it taste great! The chicken was tender and packed with flavor, the chickpeas and other vegetables were outstanding, even the sauce on the side complimented everything perfectly. The only issue I had with this meal was my naan was a little beat up, but it was still fluffy and delicious. In the wise words of guest reviewer Brie Burke, “it was so buss-y”. ♾/10
