Shooting at Pittsburgh Synagogue Leaves 11 Dead and Six Wounded
On October 27th, 2018, a gunman entered the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and began to shoot at people inside. Worshippers had been gathered in separate rooms to pray when the terrorist entered, armed with various firearms. Gunfire was exchanged between the terrorist and the police officers who arrived at the scene before the gunman finally surrendered. 11 were left dead, and 6 were wounded. No children were among the casualties. The victims were David and Cecil Rosenthal, Richard Gottfried, Jerry Rabinowitz, Irving Younger, Daniel Stein, Joyce Fienberg, Melvin Wax, Bernice and Sylvan Simon, and Rose Mallinger. This massacre has been pegged as the deadliest hate crime against Jews that has occurred in the United States (Gormly par. 1). The Jewish nurse Ari Mahler who treated the shooter’s injuries said that he chose to show the shooter empathy. “I felt that the best way to honor his victims was for a Jew to prove him wrong,” Mahler said in a Facebook post on Saturday, November 3rd.
